What is a Western Melodrama?

If you’ve ever sat in on an old western movie where the bad guy twirls his mustache, the hero rides in to save the girl and the crowd cheers and laughs along, then you’ve already caught the vibe of a melodrama. I mean it’s a pretty easy trip – just go watch some old western films and you’ll get the gist of it pretty quick.

Melodramas are some of the most entertaining forms of live theatre out there because they mash together comedy, action, getting the audience involved and good old fashioned western storytelling into one piece of fast-paced entertainment that’s fun for the whole family. We’ve got The Great Western Melodrama playing at Westgate Theatre and audiences can experience this timeless style of entertainment for themselves.

What Makes a Melodrama Different?

A melodrama is a theatrical performance built around classic stock characters – clear heroes, evil villains, damsels in distress and over-the-top situations. Unlike those serious dramas that try to be all realistic and subtle, relying on labored character development, melodramas are all about being big, bold and just plain fun. From the opening scene to the high-stakes and gripping second half, the comedy is riotous and the story will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Now in a traditional melodrama you’ll usually find:

  • A heroic cowboy or the guy everyone’s rooting for
  • A comically evil baddie that the audience loves to hate
  • Someone (usually a girl) in a tight spot who needs saving
  • Loads of slapstick humour and silly situations
  • Action scenes that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat
  • The audience is right in on the action too – people are encouraged to cheer for the hero, boo the villain and just let their hair down and have a good time.

The History of Melodrama

Melodrama really took off in the 1800s as live theatre started spreading across America. Itinerant theatre groups would come into mining towns, railroad communities and frontier settlements all over the American West and put on shows that everyone could relate to.

These shows were made to entertain big crowds with simple stories that anyone could follow. Since a lot of the audience was families, melodramas played up on comedy, adventure and just plain good moral lessons.

As western culture became such a big part of American folklore, it’s no surprise that melodramas started using cowboy themes, saloons, sheriffs, outlaws and just all sorts of other western ideas. Over time melodramas became a beloved tradition of family entertainment that’s still going strong today.

Why Audiences Still Love Melodramas

Even in this age of streaming services and all that other digital stuff, melodramas are still going strong because they’re interactive, high-energy and just plain fun.

Watching a live melodrama is a totally different experience from sitting at home watching a movie. The crowd is in on the action and its laughter, cheers and reactions all become part of the show itself.

Families especially love melodramas because they’re clean and funny, with a fast-paced story and loads of opportunities for the audience to get in on the action. Plus you get memorable characters, a unique western atmosphere and entertainment for all ages.

What To Expect at a Melodrama

If you’ve never been to a melodrama before, just be prepared for an evening full of laughter, surprises and crazy crowd energy.

Most melodramas have:

  • Great costumes and sets that’ll transport you right back into the wild west
  • Villains that are just so over-the-top they’re funny and heroes that you can’t help but root for
  • Musical bits and comedy skits that’ll keep you in stitches
  • Scenes that fly by in a flash
  • Loads of crowd interaction – the performers love to get the audience involved

At Westgate Theatre, we also throw in a pre-show and some old-fashioned treats during intermission to make the experience even more fun.
